年轻神武的罗摩在比武招亲大会上折断了神弓，迎娶了美丽的悉达为妻。罗摩的父亲十车王感到自己已年迈，决定传位给自己最心爱的长子罗摩。十车王曾对救过自己性命的一个王妃承诺要满足她两个愿望，而王妃受人挑拨，便要十车王兑现承诺，要将罗摩放逐到森林中14年，并让自己的儿子巴拉特继承王位。尽管十车王非常不情愿这样做，但他必须履行自己的诺言，于是罗摩被放逐了。罗摩的妻子悉达也请求跟随自己的丈夫一同到森林中去生活，同时罗摩最忠实的兄弟罗什曼那也伴随左右。 流放生活有艰辛，也有快乐，也有奇遇，罗摩得到了毗湿奴神的弓，和永远用不完的箭......就这样，十三年过去了，但他们的命运仍然劫数未尽。十首罗刹魔王受到鼓动，用妖术劫走了悉达。于是，罗摩兄弟便开始了四处奔波营救悉达的旅程。他们来到了猴子王国，遇到了神猴哈奴曼。在罗摩的帮助下，推翻了原来残暴的猴子国王，赢得了猴子王国的尊重与支持。他们援助罗摩一起向魔王宣战......
